Bio of Dimitrios Karypidis MD, MSc, MSc, PhD, FAACS, FICS, FRSM, FEBOPRAS, FACS
Dr Karypidis is full member of the Royal Society of Medicine in the UK which is another title of honor and recognition.
Dr Dimitrios Karypidis is currently an on-term lecturer at the Department of Plastic Surgery in the University Of Athens, Greece, a Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London and a Tutor at Cardiff University. Dr Karypidis is also the medical director and founder of iDerma Private Clinic, specializing in Aesthetic Medicine, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Acropolis, Athens.
The strong clinical and research background in reconstructive plastic surgery, the highest professional and ethical standards along with the unconditional devotion to help patients comprise the foundations of his training and practice.
Early in the period of his residency he made an effort to pursue a more rigorous training scheme on microsurgery. Therefore he had the great opportunity to work with Dr J.K Terzis in Microsurgery Research Center, Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia where he was able to obtain significant clinical and research experience in the treatment of facial and brachial plexus paralysis, upper limb and peripheral nerve reconstructive microsurgery through the rigorous clinical program in the Center which led to the publication of several papers on facial reanimation and reconstructive microsurgery. Specific areas included the development of strategies and efficient algorithms towards the restoration of blink and the treatment of synkinesis in facial reanimation. Direct neurotization for enhancing the function of partially denervated muscle targets was also extensively investigated. Postoperative outcomes were quantified using validated, established methodologies and significant evidence was documented in order to develop valid algorithms of surgical planning. Additionally experimental research experience was gained in several research projects that were undertaken in the Center.
His training continued with Prof. Santanelli in Rome, Italy, where he had the chance to complete a Masters course (MSc) in breast reconstructive microsurgery and improve my understanding of complex oncoplastic surgery and breast cancer treatment. The use of the DIEP and SIEA flaps along with the effect of certain risk factors for skin flap ischemia in the various types of mastectomy were among the topics of investigation and interest.
In the Plastic Surgery Department at the University of Athens, general plastic surgery, soft tissue/skin oncoplastic surgery and skin graft transplantation (in this area he have obtained his PhD), aesthetic plastic surgery and laser applications comprised areas of clinical practice and research. Dr Karypidis had therefore the opportunity to undertake clinical projects to strengthen and expand the existing program as well as to tutor postgraduate students towards preparing their dissertations, to prepare and conduct lectures on plastic surgery for the undergraduate students and to perform plastic surgery procedures in the Department. He also actively participated in the critical interpretation and analysis of data and in publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals.
Of great importance to me and my role in the University of Athens, were his previous studies in wound healing and tissue repair in Cardiff University, UK which helped him develop academic skills in research methodology and critical analysis as well as gain significant experience in wound healing. The studies also included the treatment of chronic ulcer, scar formation, acute wounds and tissue defects repair. In Cardiff University he was also offered the status of Honorary Tutor which offered a way to enhance his tutoring and teaching skills, to improve his role as a reviewer of research projects and refine his critical analysis skills as well as help postgraduate students.
Dr Karypidis then moved to the Unites States where he won the Aesthetic Fellowship grant by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and had the chance to work with greatly influential mentors such as Coleman, Baker, Aston and Del Vecchio. He gained first class experience in fat sculpture, fat transfer, face lift and other facial aesthetic surgery from the pioneers in the field.
Dr Karypidis is full fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is also a fully board certified by the European Board of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery which is also a Quality Recognition qualification of skills and training following examinations.
Dr Karypidis is also an active full member of the European Association of Plastic Surgeons which is a closed society of 200 members worldwidely. These members are world renowned plastic surgeons with exceptional and awarded academic and clinical work following rigorous evaluation.
Dr Karypidis is full member of the Royal Society of Medicine in the UK which is another title of honor and recognition.
